The What’s Left Behind Playlist
The songs below all influenced me while I was writing What’s Left Behind.
“Detours” Cheryl Crow
I listened to this song as part of my getting-ready-to-write routine. It’s all about Abby, and I imagine her singing it to her mother, Lily Beth.
“Torn” Natalie Imbruglia
Abby’s fragile state of mind at the novel’s start.
“Stronger” Kelly Clarkson
Lily Beth’s motto has always been, Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
“Wish You Were Here” Pink Floyd
Luke introduced Tessa to Pink Floyd, musical taste handed down from his father.
“If I Die Young” The Band Perry
The song gives the prone-to-wallowing Tessa solace. Abby despises it.
“Paris (Ooh La La)” Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
According to Abby’s best friend, Abby’s either buttoned-up like a nun or, well, singing the above song.
“Mama’s Broken Heart” Miranda Lambert
Abby’s first-love heartbreak has been ongoing for two decades. After Abby visits Lily Beth, the song plays on the radio.
“Home” Phillip Phillips
Even though Tessa is away from home, the song is all about Abby’s loss.
“Like a Rolling Stone” Bob Dylan
This song’s for Tessa, alone and far from home, and plays during one of her scenes. (Song not included in YouTube playlist.)
